Visit the Cook Community Hub to see 'On our Selections – District Life of the 19th Century'

On our Selections – District Life of the 19th Century is now open for viewing at the Cook Community Hub.

On loan from the Hall Heritage Centre, this exhibition is an insight into the life of European settlers on the Limestone Plains from the 1820s to Federation.  By the 1850s an increasing number of free settlers and pardoned convicts created a need for land. The exhibition explains the changing land selection processes including land grants, conditional purchases and Federal capital acquisition and rural leases.  See maps and storyboards that showcase local settlers including the Schumack, Plummer, Smith and Cavanagh families.

Various aspects of how the settlers established new communities and a different life are told in a series of stories.  Read the fascinating stories from a bygone era from the local constabulary who kept the peace to how medical issues were dealt with.  Learn about the life of a blacksmith, tales from the local teachers and the social activities of the district.

JOIN US at our monthly meeting on Tuesday 7 February at 7pm at the Cook Community Hub, where the exhibition will be launched.  Family History ACT member and Hall Heritage Centre volunteer Peter Browning will speak about the exhibition and a selection of fascinating stories about the early pioneering families.  Following the talk refreshments will be served.  Free event. All welcome.

Family History ACT would like to thank the Hall Heritage Centre for the loan of this exhibition.
