Artificial intelligence is changing the way family historians research, organise and preserve their discoveries. Whether you're just beginning to explore AI or are already experimenting with new tools, our AI in Genealogy program offers practical, hands-on sessions that focus on using AI responsibly and effectively. Throughout every workshop, we emphasise that AI is a research assistant—not a replacement for original records—and that careful verification remains at the heart of good family history.

Have you ever wished your AI assistant could remember your research instead of starting from scratch every time? In this online Zoom session, Shelly Wilson demonstrates how to build a genealogy research workspace that keeps your questions, sources, notes and research together in one place.

Using a real family history case study, you'll see AI read historical handwriting, work through conflicting evidence, resolve a difficult place-name mystery, and develop a fully sourced research report. Along the way, you'll gain practical insights into organising your research, managing uncertainty, and using AI to think more clearly while always checking results against the original records.

Suitable for both experienced AI users and those simply curious about what AI can offer, this session stands alone and provides an excellent introduction to more advanced AI research techniques.

AI Photo Restoration: Next Steps Workshop – Saturday 29 August 2-4pm.

Bring your old family photographs back to life while learning how to do it responsibly.

This hands-on workshop explores a range of AI-powered restoration tools, helping participants understand which tools are best suited to repairing faded photographs, sharpening detail, restoring damaged images and improving contrast. Participants will compare results from different AI tools, learn how to recognise when AI has invented details rather than recovered them, and discover best practice for preserving original images alongside enhanced versions.

Held in person at the Cook Community Hub, the workshop is ideal for those who have already experimented with AI photo restoration or attended an introductory session. Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptop and family photographs to work on throughout the day.
