Join our family history course and journey to uncover your ancestral roots. Designed for beginners, this course will introduce essential research techniques, key historical records, and tools to help you build your family tree. Learn how to navigate archives, explore online databases, and piece together your ancestors' stories. And what to do when you hit a brick wall!

The course is in two parts: the first session is on 8th March from 2-5 p.m. This will be followed in May by a face-to-face session for Canberra-based participants and, separately, a Zoom session for those outside Canberra. If you are Canberra based, we expect that you will come to the second session for an introduction to the library and its research tools, plus a one-on-one personal follow-on for your own research. The Zoom session for external participants will also address these aspects from an on-line perspective.  We will tell you more about the second sessions on 8th March.

Don’t miss this opportunity.  The combination of guided learning and a follow-up session means you won’t be left on your own — you’ll have the chance to ask questions, clarify next steps, and apply what you’ve learnt directly to your own research.  Reserve your place now!

This course is based around the highly regarded book Family History for Beginners and Beyond — the go-to book for family history researchers at all stages. Packed with practical tips, proven strategies, and helpful “how-to” advice, the book complements the course sessions and provides a valuable reference to return to as your research progresses. Copies are available for purchase from the FHACT Bookshop and can also be bought on the day of the course at the Family History ACT library.
