Topic: Exploring Indigenous lives and telling Indigenous stories.
Special Guest Speaker: Dr Craig Cormick, OAM.
Join us as Dr Craig Cormick explores Indigenous lives and the telling of Indigenous stories.
Craig is the co-author of award-winning book, Warra Warra Wai: How Indigenous Australians discovered Captain Cook, and what they tell about the coming of the Ghost People - that involved collecting family stories from over 50 first nations people along the entire eastern coast of Australia.
We know the story of Cook’s journey up the east coast of Australia from diaries, journals and letters kept by those on board. Now, for the first time, this is the other side of the story, told by the ancestors of those who stood on the shore watching the Endeavour sail by. How did they understand their world and what sense did they make of this strange vision? And what was the impact of these first encounters with Europeans? The answers lie in tales passed down from 1770 and in truth-telling of the often more brutal engagements that followed.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Craig speak about his newest book.
Craig is a multi award-winning author and science communicator. Based in Canberra, he has always been a keen writer and has worked in journalism, communications, teaching and science communication. Craig writes across many different genres and styles, from fiction to non-fiction and literary fiction to speculative fiction.
Family History ACT had the pleasure of working with Craig in 2022 when he was a member of the judging panel for the annual E.M. Fletcher short story writing competition.
