Out and about at the Canberra Museum and Gallery: Family History ACT explores Australia’s Home Front

FHACT out and about during December

Family History ACT enjoyed an engaging morning at the Canberra Museum and Gallery in early December, with an enthusiastic audience turning out for our two special talks presented in partnership with CMAG to complement its exhibition Australia’s Home Front: 1939–1945.

The program began with Jo Callaghan’s Stories of Australians at War, where she brought individual service records to life and demonstrated how military records can be woven into family history research. Members appreciated the practical insights as well as the moving personal stories that emerged from the records.

Professor Peter Stanley followed with The Texture of Life in Australia, 1939–45, exploring how the Second World War shaped the everyday lives of Australian civilians. From the uncertainty of 1939 through to the hopes of 1945, Peter’s presentation offered rich context and sparked plenty of thoughtful discussion.

Following the talks, many attendees stayed on to chat with the presenters, continuing conversations about wartime experiences, research methods, and their own family connections to this period. The informal discussions were a highlight, reflecting the strong interest and shared enthusiasm of those who attended. Adding to the occasion was the presence of Canberra historian Rohan Goyne, the owner and collector of the artefacts featured in the CMAG exhibition, who joined in conversations with attendees.

If you missed the event, members are encouraged to visit the Australia’s Home Front: 1939–1945 exhibition at the Canberra Museum and Gallery over the holiday period. The exhibition offers a fascinating insight into wartime life in Australia.  The exhibition runs until 1 February 2026.

Thank you everyone who joined us for making this a memorable Family History ACT outing.
