New FHACT Honorary Life Member
05th November 2025
By Engagement Committee
At our recent Annual General Meeting, the members of Family History ACT elected a new Honorary Life Member. This Award is one of the highest honours which can be bestowed upon a Member of Family History ACT and recognises outstanding and distinguished service to the society and significant contributions to the broader family history and genealogy community over many years.
In 2025, we recognise Barb Toohey. For more than 25 years, Barb has given outstanding service to Family History ACT and made a lasting impact on the wider family history community. A member since 1999, Barb has contributed across many areas of the society, including serving as Library Administrator – an effort recognised with a President’s Award – and continuing as a long-standing and highly valued library volunteer. She played an essential role in the successful organisation of the 2015 AFFHO Congress and has led major heritage projects in the society, most notably the Canberra Tracks initiative, which received recognition at the 2022 ACT National Trust Heritage Awards for its innovative approach to sharing local history. Barb also undertook significant First World War research documenting the graves of 247 soldiers from the Mildura–Wentworth region, now accessible on the FHACT website.
Alongside her research and leadership, Barb is a committed educator who has presented widely, supported countless members through New Members’ sessions, and helped the public engage with genealogy through tours, courses and open days. Her tireless work, depth of knowledge and passion for preserving history have greatly enriched Family History ACT and its community, making her exceptionally deserving of recognition.
Congratulations Barb.
