2024 Father Brian Maher Lecture
22nd March 2024
By Engagement Committee
The 2024 Annual Father Brian Maher Lecture will be delivered by Cheryl Mongan from Yass & District Historical Society during our April Monthly Meeting at 7 pm on Tuesday, 2 April 2024.
Father Brian Maher's 'still point in a turning world'. Cheryl’s lecture will explore how Father Maher's historical research created a "still point" – a place of understanding and reflection – in the ever-evolving world of cultural and religious dynamics. Discover the lessons we can learn from his commitment to history as both a sanctuary of peace and a lens through which we can navigate the complexities of modern life.
Brian Maher was born in Corowa, NSW, in 1936 and passed away in Canberra in 2021. He was ordained as a Priest in the Catholic Church in Canberra in 1966 and spent most of his life serving Catholic communities in the Canberra Region as their Parish Priest. His work in chronicling the history of the Catholic Church in this region and his dedication to preserving the stories of the region’s Catholic and Irish communities have cemented his place as a pivotal figure in our understanding of faith, heritage and identity.
Cheryl Mongan has been involved in heritage organisations and advisory committees and has been a frequent speaker at seminars, conferences, and workshops for many years. She worked closely with Father Maher on the famous Shamrock in the Bush weekends at Galong and has written several books on the Irish Catholic community.
