DONATION OF HERALDIC ARTEFACTS
24th October 2023
By Engagement Committee

Heraldic artefacts belonging to Dr Niel Gunson, a founding member and Fellow of Family History ACT, were recently donated to the Society. Members were saddened to hear of Niel’s passing in April 2023. Niel assembled the first meeting of the Canberra Genealogy and Heraldry Group in October 1964. His wealth of knowledge on all heraldry-related subjects shone through and he convened the Society’s Heraldry Special Interest Group through several decades. Neil had an extensive library and collection of heraldic items that brought to life his passion for family history research and heraldry.
A selection of Niel’s heraldic collection including drawings, books, pedigrees, an English coat of arms and Scottish grant of arms was recently presented to FHACT Vice-President Michele Rainger by member and long-standing friend to Niel, Chris Lindesay. Michele gratefully accepted the heraldic donations, acknowledging them as a valuable resource that helps us to preserve our heritage. As they find a new home, members and visitors will be able to see the artefacts in the Society’s library at Cook.
