By Engagement Committee
The Theme for Family History Month in 2023 is - Secrets and Lies: using Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly and handling sensitive subjects in your family history research.
AI is already being used within family history. It offers a staggering array of opportunities to enhance or change that way that we think about family history. But with this opportunity also comes challenges that need to be understood and managed. As practising family historians we all need to come to grips with AI, to make ourselves aware of the possibilities and pitfalls of this technology and to work out how we can use it to help us in our endeavours.
Andrew Redfern is a passionate family historian and technology enthusiast. Since his initial interest in researching his family tree in the mid-1980s, Andrew has developed a deep interest in how technology can enhance the way we explore and preserve our family histories.
Recently, Andrew has become interested in the potential of artificial intelligence and machine learning to aid family historians. He has been exploring various AI-powered tools and software that can assist in genealogical research and is excited about the possibilities they offer. Andrew is an active member of the Society of Australian Genealogists, where he regularly contributes to their education committee and programs.
