Black Mountain Nature Reserve - a Special Place
A new display at the Cook Community Hub shares the stories of Black Mountain's flora and fauna. Join us for the launch of Black Mountain Nature Reserve - a Special Place on Thursday 29 September at 5pm at Family History ACT. Book here.
Black Mountain Nature Reserve, at the heart of Canberra, is a special place; significant for its cultural and natural history, geology and biodiversity. Four hundred and thirty million years ago, sediment created Black Mountain sandstone. This underlying rock is among the oldest rock formations in the Territory and supports particularly rich flora.
Black Mountain was an important gathering place for local Ngunawal people and their neighbours. It is also a key symbolic landscape element in the Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin design for our national capital.
Friends of Black Mountain (FoBM) and Family History ACT have set up a display featuring the ecology. FoBM is active in conserving the biodiversity of Black Mountain and promoting its uniqueness. Several people have been significant searchers and researchers of Black Mountain’s flora and fauna.
