Recognising our Eminent members
14th August 2024
By Engagement Committee
In a learned or professional organisation, the awarding of a fellowship refers to a privileged member who is specially elected in recognition of their work and achievements. After 24 years in its role as a learned society in Canberra and at National levels, it was deemed timely to enable our Society to honour members who, by their distinguished service and through the quality of their contributions to the aims and objectives of the Society, have furthered the cause of family history, genealogy and/or heraldry.
Two forms of Fellowship were considered and agreed at the Society’s Annual General Meeting in August 1988:
Fellowship of the Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra Inc that could be conferred upon a member who has rendered distinguished service to the Society and who has made a significant contribution to the achievement of the objects of the Society through advancement of the cause of family history, genealogy or heraldry.
Honorary Fellowship of the Heraldry and Genealogy Society of Canberra Inc that could be conferred upon a non-member deemed by the Society’s Council to have rendered distinguished service to the Society, or to have made a significant national or international contribution to the cause of family history, genealogy or heraldry.
The inaugural Fellowship was awarded to former President and Society stalwart Bill Marsh during the Society’s silver anniversary year in 1989. Bill had previously also received a Life Membership of the Society, making him the first of only three members in the Society’s history to be recognised as both a Life Member and a Fellow. Since then,15 further fellowships and two honorary fellowships have been awarded.
