Jo will recount how she discovered that her ancestors were held up by bushrangers near Braidwood in the 1860s; reportedly by the infamous Clarke brothers, one of Australia's and our region's most feared bushranger gangs. Then Judy will share her own family's connection to the same events through extensive research into her ancestors — the Clarke brothers themselves.

Together, they will reveal how family history can look very different depending on where your ancestors stood. By examining two family histories side by side, Jo and Judy will demonstrate the value of looking beyond newspaper headlines, family legends and popular myths to uncover the fuller story.

Along the way, they will showcase the rich range of records available in New South Wales archival collections for researching crime, courts, prisons and policing, providing practical tips for family historians whose ancestors found themselves on either side of the law.
