Australia has a rich and varied educational heritage. It began thousands of years ago, when the first Australians were taught by their elders. With British colonization came what is generally known as the early colonial period in education(1793-1850s). This was followed in the late 1800s by Free, Compulsory and Secular Acts (1870s-1900s) before there was an expansion of public education with Federal Involvement(1900-1960s) up to the modern era (1970s to the present) where education became more inclusive. The Australian National Museum of Education (ANME) at the University of Canberra, established in 1996, has attempted to capture this rich tapestry with its collection based on five strands, namely, policy, administration, curriculum, practice and innovation. The Museum provides a unique resource for students, teaches, researchers and the community at large. With this knowledge, educators and policymakers today will have an informed opinion when making educational decisions for the future. Visitors will have a direct link to many of the items as they relate to their own personal experience of education.
Canberra born, Dr Malcolm Beazley AM, has been a teacher, academic, administrator, writer and editor for over fifty years. He has taught at all levels of education and has held teaching and administrative positions in NSW and ACT schools. He has been an educational consultant and adviser to both State and Federal governments, for which he developed a number of innovative programs. His career has been marked by a Fulbright Scholarship in 1982, when he researched programs in the USA, which focused on the development of language abilities in children.
