"Topic: "Shall we gather at the river?"
For more than a century, the story of George Murray Burne remained largely untold. The third son of Natal pioneer John Burne and his second wife, Isabella Tyson, George trained as an attorney in South Africa before suddenly leaving for Australia late in the nineteenth century. His departure was abrupt and troubling. He left behind his wife and five children, and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance cast a long shadow over the family.
For a short time after arriving in Australia, George wrote letters home. In them, he spoke of several surgeries he had undergone and hinted at a serious professional and personal betrayal that he felt unable to explain. Before long, the letters stopped, and nothing further was heard from him. Over the years, it was widely believed that George had fled to escape the consequences of some crime or social disgrace.
Jennifer Allard lives in Ottawa, Canada, with her husband, Raymond. Born in South Africa, she studied engineering at the University of Natal before moving to Canada to complete a doctorate. She later worked in the defence sector, leading teams that prepared major proposals for government procurement of advanced military capabilities.
Now retired, Jennifer devotes her time to researching and writing about her family history. Her work has taken her and Raymond to many of the places her ancestors once lived, including England, Scotland, Ireland, the Isle of Man, and South Africa. In 2025, she published seven books, including two about her great- great-uncle, George Murray Burne, a lawyer who disappeared in Australia at the end of the nineteenth century. Jennifer is now visiting Australia to see the places where George spent the last years of his life.
