India SIG Meeting (Register)
India Special Interest Group meeting is a hybrid meeting for members with an interest in researching family history related to India. Members should purchase a ticket to attend this event either via Zoom or in-person. After registering to attend via Zoom you will receive an email with a link to the external Zoom website to complete the registration.
The topic for this meeting is:
"What lies beneath? Historians, sources and Indian contexts."
Good historians use every source they can lay their hands on – books, letters, newspapers, paintings, photographs, objects, built and natural landscapes, oral testimony, oral tradition, and much more – and they regard all of them with varying degrees of suspicion. Drawing on my research on a Scottish family in India, as well as a specific interest in the artist Zoffany, I’ll explore how particular sources lead to larger stories, ranging from a cock fight in late 18th century Lucknow to a mission hospital in Kalimpong in the 1920s.
Stephen Foster is a historian, long retired, but still a historian. Two of his books relate, in different ways, to India: A Private Empire (2010) and Zoffany’s Daughter (2017).
