The Australia Special Interest Group Meeting is a Zoom meeting for members with an interest in researching their Australian ancestors. Members should purchase a ticket to attend this event either via Zoom. After registering to attend via Zoom, you will receive an email with a link to the meeting.

The topic for this meeting is:

The possible effects of Syphilis on Family History

Jennifer Barnes worked as a Registered Nurse in NSW and Tasmania and has a longstanding interest in health matters.

This presentation is not judgemental. It is not intended to be confronting or upsetting. This presentation considers how syphilis may provide a possible explanation for
types of disabilities, choice of occupation, larger than usual gaps in between children or child mortality that occured in our families.
Syphilis arrived in New South Wales with the First Fleet in 1788 and there was no cure until the 1940s. It is a very serious and complex infection. It is also highly stigmatised due to the mode of transmission. Please note that while the presentation does not include any images of the infection, it does contain internet links so that members may do further research if they wish.
