The AI in Genealogy Special Interest Group explores practical, responsible and creative ways to use artificial intelligence in family history research. Our sessions are friendly, evidence-focused and suitable for a range of experience levels — from curious beginners to confident experimenters. Members should purchase a ticket to attend this event via Zoom.

The topic for this meeting is:

"AI for Family History: Your Questions Answered"

Curious about AI but not sure where to begin? Wondering whether tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot are actually useful for family history — or whether they are more trouble than they’re worth?

This friendly session is for people who are just beginning to explore AI, or who would like a clearer, more practical understanding of how it can support genealogy research. We’ll start with a simple overview of what AI tools can and cannot do, then move into examples and questions from participants.

Possible topics include using AI to summarise information, explain unfamiliar terms, suggest research strategies, work with old documents, draft family history stories, create timelines, and organise research notes. We’ll also talk about the risks: mistakes, invented information, privacy, copyright, and the need to check everything against real sources.

Bring your questions — basic, sceptical, practical or curious.Cheryl, Shelly and Terese, our Group convenors and members of the AI SIG group will help answer them. This session is designed to help you decide where AI might fit into your own family history toolbox.

This session also provides a helpful introduction to the November AI Essentials for Genealogists course.

Cost: Members: Free

         Non Members: $10.00
