Irish Farming Ancestors and the Land They Worked

When tracing Irish ancestry, many of us discover that our forebears were closely tied to the land—working as tenant farmers, labourers, or smallholders. Their lives were shaped not only by the seasons and soil but also by forces beyond their control: landlords, crop failures, political unrest, and sweeping changes to land ownership.

This presentation will briefly cover the key sources for researching these ancestors—civil and church records, census substitutes, valuation records such as Griffith’s Valuation, and the Registry of Deeds. Many of us have Irish ancestors in the 19th century who lived close to the land—Your tenant farmer ancestor, for example, could have been a freeholder, a leaseholder, or a tenant at will. 

 

This presentation will guide you through the key records that can help uncover their stories and show where and how they lived and worked on the land in 19th-century Ireland.

She will briefly discuss civil and church records, census substitutes, valuation records such as Griffith’s Valuation, and the Registry of Deeds. The presentation also examines the role of the landed estates and how records from the Landed Estates Court and estate papers can shine a light on landlord-tenant relationships. Finally, I’ll look at how land reform—through the Irish Land Acts—gradually changed rural society and gave tenant farmers new opportunities. ;
