- Presenter - Jo Callaghan
- Researching military ancestors can provide fascinating insights into their lives, service, and historical events they experienced. Military records often contain valuable details such as enlistment dates, ranks, regiments, physical descriptions, next of kin, and even personal letters or pension records. Family historians can explore sources like service records, war diaries, medal rolls, and casualty lists to uncover their ancestors' roles in conflicts ranging from the Napoleonic Wars to World War II. Key resources include Ancestry and Findmypast, which hold extensive British and Commonwealth military collections, Fold3 for U.S. military records, and the National Archives for official service documents. Understanding military history can also help place an ancestor’s experiences in context, providing a deeper appreciation of their contributions and sacrifices.
