Convict SIG (Information)
The Convict Special Interest Group meeting is a hybrid meeting for members with an interest in researching their convict ancestors. Members should purchase a ticket to attend this event by logging in and selecting the event with "(Register)" in the title.
The topic for this meeting is:
"Gold and Liberty: Former Tasmanian Convicts for California, New Zealand, England."
In this presentation, join ANU PhD Candidate Matthew Cunneen as he delves into his research findings on former convicts who departed Launceston from 1848 to 1854 for overseas destinations. Not all convicts transported to the Australian colonies remained there and yet very little is known about those who left them. This research looks at ex-convicts who ventured boldly to California for its 1848 gold rush, decided to try their luck in New Zealand, or who made the journey home. The key characteristics of these particular convicts and the circumstances of their departures from Launceston are revealed in new detail.
