DNA SIG Meeting (Information)
The DNA SIG meeting is a hybrid meeting for members with an interest in DNA for their genealogy research. Members should register to attend this event by logging in and selecting the event with "(Register)" in the title.
The topic for this meeting is:
Forensic Genetic Genealogy
Associate Professor Nathan Scudder of the University of Technology Sydney and the Australian Federal Police will speak on Forensic/Investigative Genetic Genealogy in the Australian Context. He will explain how Australian police use genetic genealogy techniques like those used by family historians to identify perpetrators of serious crimes as well as unknown deceased victims of crime. In many ways, it's similar to what we do in our family history research: using DNA from relatives of the person whose identity we are seeking and matching that with public and private records.
We have probably all heard how the Golden State Killer was identified through GEDmatch using these techniques. It will be interesting to hear about the work here in Australia.
After A/Prof Scudder’s presentation there will be ample time for questions. We can then hear from members about their DNA success stories.
If you are interested in this event you might also be interested in the many other benefits of membership. See Membership Benefits for member benefits, or go straight to Join or Renew to join.
