The topic for this meeting is:
"Rushing to Wed?"
European and Anglo-Indian widows in India married very quickly after the death of their husband, compared to widows in Europe. The speed at which they re-married was also influenced by the age at which they were widowed, and their ethnicity (whether they were characterised as European or Anglo-Indian in the records). With the help of volunteers from the FHACT India SIG, Dr Cathy Day of the University of Newcastle researched the marital history of over 400 widows who re-married in St Mary’s, Fort St George in the 19th century, to work out the average re-marriage interval overall, by age and by ethnicity. Along the way, she encountered some interesting stories and will share the research results and stories in this presentation.
A key to the success of identifying the date of death of the previous husband of each widow was the use of the Register of Madras Army European Soldiers (RMAES), along with the Madras Army Casualty Lists. Fran Colbey will share the techniques she used to find elusive first husbands and will talk us through how to access the records, as well as tips, tricks and trip-ups.
