India SIG Meeting (Information)

Date & Time
6 April 2024 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Timezone
(UTC+11:00) Australia/Sydney

This is a hybrid meeting for members with an interest in researching family history related to India. Members should purchase a ticket to attend this event by logging in and selecting the event with "(Register)" in the title.

The topic for this meeting is:

"Five Macalister Brothers in Eighteenth Century India"

Five brothers John, Charles, Keith, Mathew and Norman left Scotland for India in the second half of the eighteenth century. They joined the East India Company military and fought in the seizure of Pondicherry from the French in 1788 and in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Mysore Wars.

My talk will include their background in Skye and Kintyre that might have influenced their decision to go forth to India, the Battle of Pollilur (1880) and the aftermath imprisonment in Seringapatam and the final defeat of Tippoo Sultan at Seringapatam in 1799.

John and Charles died in India and Norman was drowned at sea presumably when the Indiaman Ocean was lost at sea as a result of a typhoon.  Norman was Governor of Prince of Wales Island (Penang) at the time.  Only Keith and Mathew returned to live in Scotland.

These men formed a close network of comrades and contacts from their time in India.  Fortunes were made and I will touch on the path by which funds were transferred back from India to Scotland and how they used these funds.

Because of their influence and patronage, several family members from subsequent generations also went to India.
